Adopt a School

Woohoo!! Our school is so excited to announce that we’ve been adopted by Indigo as this year’s candidate for their Adopt a School program!

From September 18 to October 9, 2016, fundraising efforts will be in full swing at Coles in the Lloyd Mall. Our library and students are going to benefit greatly through in-store and online support.

There are three ways to help donate:

  • Donate at our local Coles bookstore in the Lloyd Mall: 100% of all donations go directly to our school and when we purchase books with our fundraised money, we get 30% off of the books we select for our library.
  • Book Bonus (online offer): Go to indigo.ca - Select the province of Alberta and find Barr Colony School.  For every two books donated, Indigo’s Love of Reading Foundation will add an extra book to our donation, up to a total of 40 books!
  • Tell a Story, Give a Story: Add your story online for FREE! The Foundation will match an additional book for each featured story, up to 10 books!

**That could be 50 extra books in total our library could receive for FREE!!**

This is a phenomenal opportunity for our school to increase our library resources with the generosity of our community.  Anyone can support our school from friends, family and neighbors…spread the word!  Our school would appreciate your support!

To help with our fundraising efforts, our school will be doing a bottle drive.  If you’d like to donate your bottles, bring them into the school anytime next week.  Or you could bring them to our school parking lot from 10 a.m.- noon on Saturday, September 24th.  Bottles will be taken to the bottle depot later that afternoon.  Money generated will be donated to the Adopt a School website to support Barr Colony School.

Please visit adoptaschool.indigo.ca from September 18 to October 9, 2016 to show your support to our library! We look forward to surprising the staff and students at Barr Colony School with all of the new library books this year!!

Literacy at Our School

Literacy is an integral part of how we operate at Barr Colony School. Not only do teachers at Barr Colony work together to plan and deliver lessons targeted at each student’s instructional level, but they also used the new Saskatchewan Reads document to guide their instruction. The extensive Saskatchewan Reads document is based on the research of leading reading experts.

Our Literacy Coach is an important part of our school-based literacy team and works alongside teachers to improve instructional practices.

At Barr Colony School, we have celebrated literacy in many ways this year. Every day, students from our leadership club read with students who do not always have an opportunity to read with someone at home.

We have had a “booknic” where parents came to school with a picnic lunch and read with their children. Many families come to our Family Literacy nights for both Kindergarten as well as the whole school.

During literacy nights, families read books and work together on activities based on what they have read. Character dress up day is always a favourite with students as they get to show off their favourite characters from their favourite books.

One of the school’s favourite activities this year was when two of our Grade 6 students shared a Cree book with the rest of the classes in the school. This was an amazing opportunity for them to take some leadership and to celebrate their culture.
